The history of Sudan health services
This book on the development of the health service in the Sudan contains separate chapters on sleeping sickness (pp. 181-193), malaria (pp. 251-266), schistosomiasis (pp. 267-280) and leishmaniasis (pp. 281-293). The chapter on schistosomiasis emphasizes the impact of the Gezira irrigation scheme and describes the subsequent behaviour of the disease from 1940 to 1965. The chapter on trypanosomiasis surveys the behaviour of the disease from 1900 to 1965, considering major outbreaks and control methods; it contains 25 references. The section on malaria includes 15 references. It emphasizes the impact of the Gezira irrigation scheme from 1920 to 1940, and considers the incidence and nature of malaria treated from 1940 to 1965. The major epidemiological features of malaria in the Sudan are noted and control measures are discussed.
