The Anglo-American cataloguing rules are in a process of constant revision. This paper briefly outlines the history of the cataloguing rules and the reasons for holding an International Conference on the Principles and Future Development of AACR in Toronto, Canada in October 1997. The outcome of the conference is described, particularly two projects. The first deals with an analysis of the logic of the rules in order to determine the principles upon which they are based. The second deals with a re-examination of the concept of ongoing publications.
